ABOUT US

Our Goals

Restoration of the degraded land through involving the young generation in planting one million trees in Kilifi County.

GREEN CITY INITIATIVE

Green city initiative is a plan to make the city more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The world is facing a n ecological crisis and most of this crisis have their origin in most cities in the world. Research shows that the more industrialised the country is the more harm it creates to the environment. The reason being that the cities were not designed to be environmentally friendly and sustain themselves. It is evident that by 2030 most of the population in the world will be living in the urban centres. Therefore for us to win the war about Climate crisis we have to start by looking for ways to green our cities.

This problem can be solved through various ways, which include.Use of clean energy, reducing pollution, improving the transport system, creating awareness about environmental conservation and tree planting. As onemilliontrees4kilifi we have taken the two most effective and sustainable ways to solve this problem which include creating awareness over the same and planting of trees. Planting of trees is done in the public parks close to the city on the road reserve area, and public institutions in the city.

By doing this we are able to mitigate the crisis of climate change, we are able to get clean air and reduce the greenhouse gas and make the city more livableeen our cities.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

These are the different types of lives on the earth. It includes a variety of animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as the variety of genes and ecosystems. The importance of this is numerous which includes providing us with food, helping to regulate the climate of our plant, helping in protecting the water quality and providing habitat for wildlife.

In Kilifi the biodiversity is threatened mainly through deforestation that has taken up close to 7% of the forest cover since 2001 to 2022 according to GFW. This has caused most wildlife species to reduce in number; some of these endangered species are the Sokoke Pipit, Sokoke Scops-owl, Savannah Elephant, Spotted ground thrush according to iNaturalist.org . Most of these species are threatened by the loss of their habitat which mostly include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest which is mostly cleared for charcoal in Kilifi.

In order to protect the endangered species we are planting trees which are suitable for hosting this species. These trees include the babakofi type which is preferred due to its amazing shade that supports other plants and also perfect for birds. We are projecting to have 15 acres of land in the next 5 years. The land that is going to host the plant species which are endangered. By doing so we are able to help in maintaining the biodiversity that used to exist before human activities destroyed it.

SCHOOL MICROCLAMATING

Onemilliontrees4kilifi seeing that Kilifi County should be at per in achieving SDG 1 (No Poverty) , SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 4 ( Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), we started the goal of planting fruit trees in over 400 schools in the region. We choose schools because schools have vast land which is not to be used, they also have students who will help in looking after the trees and lastly the most of them have water sources which will be used to water the trees during the extreme harsh conditions . Schools make this project very sustainable.

REFORESTATION AND AFFORESTATION

As onemilliontrees4kilifi we are engaging the residents mostly from Magarini in reforestation, this is done through training of the community members in setting up of the seedlings beds. After the community members have acquired the skills of tree planting we educate them on the best strategy of planting the trees and the importance of doing so. We are targeting to plant 150 Ha in 5 years which will help in increasing the forest cover which was lost. We also encourage the residents who have cleared their land in order to build structures and do farming to also plant trees in the homestead. Small regions which have trees when combined will help to get more forest cover.
