Kilifi Intergenerational Climate Change Dialogue (KICCD)

November 15

THEME : Unified Actions for Climate Resilience in Kilifi

Background
Climate change poses a significant threat worldwide, with increasing evidence that it undermines the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and affects investment performance aimed at achieving these goals. In Africa, access to vital information, knowledge networks, and climate learning tools that build resilience in livelihoods, institutions, and ecosystems is often limited. Kenya has taken a proactive role on the global stage, exemplified by initiatives such as the African Climate Summit in September 2023, and ambitious efforts like the transition to 100% green energy and the launch of the 15 Billion Trees initiative. Despite these advancements, the country continues to grapple with resource scarcity and the dire impacts of climate change, including drought and
food insecurity. Kilifi County is particularly affected by climate-related challenges such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, drought, famine, deforestation, and waste management issues. While top-down initiatives from multinational events, including the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the Conference of Parties (COP), have spurred various climate change mitigation strategies, it is crucial to include local communities in the dialogue. Community members possess essential insights into their needs and can guide the development of appropriate, sustainable solutions.

Kilifi Intergenerational Climate Change Dialogue (KICCD) 2024 The Kilifi Intergenerational Climate Change Dialogue (KICCD) 2024 aims to localize climate action by uniting local stakeholders and community members of all ages to discuss the vulnerabilities stemming from current climate changes. This dialogue will explore existing mitigation and adaptation strategies, policies, and measures based on the lived experiences of those in Kilifi. It aims to have a two day dialogue that starts on 15th Nov 2024 where we shall mobilize 300 community members from the 35 wards of Kilifi
representing over 1.2 Million people. Day two which will be on 16th Nov 2024 will comprise of 70 Climate Champions from the 35 wards.
